Why do some children struggle to read?

Reading is built from many small skills: hearing the sounds in words, connecting letters to sounds, blending them into words, recognizing words instantly, and understanding what the words mean together. If any of those building blocks is weak, everything above it suffers.

A child who has to sound out every word has little attention left for meaning, so comprehension falls apart even when the child is bright. Most struggling readers aren't lacking effort or intelligence. They're missing specific skills that were never practiced until they became automatic.

How Fit Reading works

Every student starts with a comprehensive reading assessment that finds the exact skills that aren't mastered yet. Your child then works one-on-one with a certified learning coach on a program built from those results, starting with the foundations and working up.

Instruction is structured, explicit and sequential, beginning with phonemic awareness and phonics. Each skill is practiced accurately first, then for speed, until it's fluent. Every session is measured and charted using precision teaching, so the program adjusts to your child's progress in real time.

Signs your child may need reading help

Families often reach out when they notice one or more of these:

Early Reading

  • Struggles to learn letter names or sounds
  • Has trouble rhyming or hearing sounds in words
  • Guesses at words instead of sounding them out
  • Reading feels slow and labored

Fluency & Spelling

  • Reads word by word, without expression
  • Skips or misreads small words
  • Spelling is inconsistent or phonetically off
  • Runs out of time on reading tests

Comprehension

  • Reads aloud well but can't explain what it meant
  • Struggles with main idea and inferences
  • Weak vocabulary for their grade
  • Has to reread passages again and again

Confidence & School

  • Avoids reading or says it's “boring”
  • Behind peers, or teacher has raised concerns
  • Grades don't reflect how hard they try
  • Frustration or low confidence about reading

What does Fit Reading teach?

Fit Reading covers the full path from first sounds to confident comprehension. Your child starts wherever the assessment shows the gaps are.

Phonemic Awareness

Hearing, blending and segmenting the individual sounds in spoken words.

Phonics & Decoding

Letter names and sounds, sounding out words, nonsense words and word analysis.

Sight Words

Recognizing high-frequency words instantly, without sounding them out.

Reading Fluency

Oral and silent passage reading that is accurate, smooth and fast.

Vocabulary & Spelling

Word meanings, morphographs (prefixes, roots, suffixes) and accurate spelling.

Comprehension

Understanding, recalling and explaining what was read, from sentences to full passages.

In pre-K or kindergarten? Early reading and reading readiness are taught in Lil' Fits. If your child decodes well but struggles with inference and reasoning, Fit Logic targets the thinking skills behind comprehension.

How is Fit Reading different from reading tutoring?

Most reading tutoring works on this week's book or assignment. Fit Reading finds and fixes the underlying skills that make reading hard, then measures both accuracy and speed until reading is automatic.

Fit Reading helps students who:

  • Have dyslexia or a reading disability

  • Are reluctant or frustrated readers
  • Fell behind (for example, after interrupted schooling)
  • Need to close gaps before the next school year

  • Are strong readers who want more challenge
